Fishing in Alaska

It was my first trip to Alaska to fish Pacific salmon. I've read a lot about a fishing trip and now wanted to test myself. As well as the Atlantic, Pacific salmon during its turn does not feed on spawning. Why did he bite, still remains a mystery. Since many fish are in the individual plants, there is almost a sure chance to catch them, in any case, with better prospects than for the rare Atlantic salmon.

In the Nushagak huge stocks of salmon. Every second Chinook salmon that spawn in Alaska tends to rise to the upper reaches of the river. This year, the expected arrival of 750 thousand chinook, and in addition, chum, pink, sockeye, coho salmon . The problem is that the Nushagak - big river and has many tributaries. Accordingly salmon grace is distributed to many hundreds of kilometers of the river.

How optimistic we were on arrival, so come quickly sobering, because the river was not the creeks where salmon have been detained in the way of his journey. Past our camp held real salmon highway, that is, the fish did not think to stay at this place. Their spawning grounds were for many miles upstream.

The river full of fish

In the last week of June, the river was nearly empty, but suddenly brightened nature. The first pink salmon began to show their backs, rising to the surface. More and more fish coming into the river, and in the morning almost did not have any gravel banks with no recent traces of bears and wolves. All nature is striving for the great grace of salmon, and we are also looking forward to a great race. And it came!

In some channel trenches hunched over countless Nushagak king salmon. It seemed like the whole trainloads of salmon moving up the river. However, spinning tackle or fly-fish catch was almost impossible. Over the week we, eight anglers caught at least a dozen chinook! Among them were also a few small salmon, which were in the sea just one season.

Then, we finally put our boat right. For five casts felled five fish, but pulled out just two. A salmon have moved on ... I get into a fuss and decided to focus more on photographing than fishing with a small elevation wanted to take some pictures and saw a boat on the river with an American tour guide and two clients. She seemed to be standing still in the middle of the river. All of a sudden commotion on board, 10 m behind the boat jumped decent chinook. After fussy vyvazhivaniya team drifting boat pulled out of the water is clearly a magnificent fish weighing more than 10 kg. I took several pictures of fish playing and entered into conversation with the Americans. In the boat were a few salmon are from 3 to 12 kg.

What do Americans do not like us? It turns out they were looking for in the river riverbed trench in which were salmon. In these places, the depth of the river was from 4 to 8 pm When they found the gutter, then dropped anchor and started catching, using deep running crankbaits with noise cameras (Hot-Shot or Wiggle Wart firm Storm). Crankbaits, cast downstream, behind the boat picks up quickly over, and they dived into the water to a depth of several meters, where he quickly moved from side to side. Ideally baits have to work within a few centimeters from the bottom.

The rising salmon sooner or later inevitably stumble on the bait and powerfully attacked them, that's them in the next few days and we have clearly demonstrated. The Americans took us in a friendly manner and gave a few crankbaits. In such circumstances, the fish was caught perfectly on the loaded and salmon roe, known as a tampon. Secure the boat to the strong current was quite problematic, as required anchor quite certain kind and a very long rope. American guide advised me to keep the boat on course only with the motor. If all goes well, he told me to have abated a little gas. Lures are in the local depth, but the boat will move slowly downstream. Thus can Harvesting large areas.

Finally, a good catch

Success came after the first drift. In the following days, we rarely had to go backwards more than 100 m, which would catch chinook salmon. On my boat managed to catch up to 15-25 chinook per day - a real reward for the difficult start. It is noteworthy that bites were very different. When the salmon has turned in a biting, he almost tore the rod from his hands. If, on the contrary, would grab the bait back, the tension of the fishing line to slacken and then just a quick preroll fishing line and powerful sweeps helped pinpoint the fish. On my combination of trolling and drifting made a strong impression. We threw up to four crankbaits behind the boat. If we were located well above the Run-of River trough, all four baits worked near the bottom in slow motion.

For the drift of 300 m it took us about half an hour. Depending on how wide was the river-bed trough, the boat had a motorized moving from side to side. Because of this gaggle of cranks behind the boat moved from one end of the trough to the other and slowly allowed fishing on a large lot.

All this happened in the rapid current. It was incredible, and the number of bites that cause the reverse trolling bait. It turned out that lures in strong current is a key stimulus, which tips the salmon to bite. Due to inverse trolling we managed to catch a lot of fish. And I look forward to when I can once again successfully apply what he has learned in Alaska.
